Businesses vehicle rental. They just don’t want to be tied in.
Across the UK, businesses are rethinking how they get their cars and vans. Not because they need fewer vehicles, but because committing to one for three or four years feels like a much bigger gamble than it used to.
The latest figures from the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) show a clear pattern: uncertainty about the economy, falling EV values and a new pay-per-mile EV tax on the horizon are all pushing firms towards shorter, more flexible arrangements.
Here’s what the data says, what it means for your business, and how to stay mobile without taking on long-term risk. (Weighing up rental, leasing and buying side by side? Our complete guide to vehicle rental vs leasing vs financing covers that in detail.)
What’s changed in 2026
The short answer is uncertainty. According to the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), 63% of business vehicle rentals and leasing businesses expect UK economic conditions to worsen in 2027. When the future is hard to predict, committing to a vehicle for four years feels like a big gamble.
That caution is changing how businesses get their vehicles:
- Businesses are the backbone of rental. Business customers account for 67% of car rental and 84% of van rental in the UK.
- Firms are holding off on long-term commitments. The BVRLA expects rental to keep providing short-term mobility while businesses avoid big financial decisions.
- Van operators are favouring flexibility. In the van sector, economic uncertainty is pushing firms towards rental and flexi-hire rather than buying.
- Replacement costs are biting. The UK’s leased van fleet fell 0.4% in the year to mid-2026, as businesses extended existing contracts rather than face higher replacement costs.
In other words, businesses still need vehicles. They just don’t want to be locked in.
What this means for your business?
If your plans for the next few years aren’t set in stone, a long-term vehicle commitment can quickly become a cost you can’t get out of. The businesses we speak to most often are dealing with situations like these:
- A new contract with an end date. You need vans for 9 months, not 4 years.
- A new starter on probation. Committing to a long agreement before they’ve settled in feels premature.
- A vehicle stuck on order. Your team needs to keep moving while you wait for delivery.
- A seasonal peak. The run-up to Christmas brings a spike in delivery work that won’t last all year.
- A growing start-up. You need vehicles now, but don’t yet fit traditional finance criteria.
In each case, the vehicle need is real, but the timescale is uncertain. That’s exactly the gap flexible rental is designed to fill.
Three questions to ask before signing a long-term deal
Long-term agreements still suit some businesses. Before you commit, it’s worth asking yourself honestly:
1. Will I definitely need this vehicle in three years’ time? If the answer depends on contracts, staffing or growth you can’t predict yet, a shorter term protects you.
2. What happens if I need to end it early? Early termination on a long agreement can be expensive. Know the figure before you sign.
3. Could that cash work harder elsewhere? Money spent on deposits and initial payments is money not spent on staff, stock or growth.
If any of those answers gave you pause, flexible rental is worth a conversation.
Electric vehicles: why renting reduces the risk
Electric vehicles make a lot of sense for businesses, especially with low benefit-in-kind tax for company car drivers. But owning one comes with two big unknowns.
Depreciation. 64% of rental and leasing companies expect EV used values to keep falling. If you buy an EV, that loss in value is yours. If you rent one, it isn’t.
Pay-per-mile tax. From 1 April 2028, the government’s new Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) will charge 3p per mile for electric cars and 1.5p per mile for plug-in hybrids. Nobody yet knows exactly how this will affect running costs or resale values.
Flexible rental lets you enjoy the benefits of electric driving now, without betting your balance sheet on what EVs will be worth in 2028 and beyond. When the rules change, you can review your options rather than being locked in.
How flexible rental works with YVR?
At Your Vehicle Rental, we believe in usership over ownership. Our approach to business vehicle rental is simple:
- Rental from 1 day to 24 months. Choose the term that matches your actual need, not the one a finance agreement dictates.
- No large upfront payment. Generally, there’s nothing to pay upfront beyond your agreed terms.
- The price you see is the price you pay. Clear monthly pricing, transparent agreements, and no hidden return charges.
- Time-stamped condition reports. Every vehicle is photographed on delivery, so there are no surprises at the end.
- Real people, real decisions. We’re human-led, not “computer says no”. If you’re a start-up or don’t fit standard finance criteria, we’ll still talk it through.
- Cars, vans, EVs and hybrids. From small cars to SUVs, electric vehicles, vans and pickups.
We’re based in Brockhall, Lancashire, supporting businesses across the North West and throughout the UK.
Is flexible rental right for your business?
If you answer yes to two or more of these, rental is likely worth a conversation:
- Do you need a vehicle for less than two years?
- Is the length of your contract or project uncertain?
- Would you rather keep cash in the business than spend it on a deposit?
- Are you waiting on a delayed vehicle from a dealer?
- Have you been turned down for finance, despite a solid business?
- Do you want to try an electric vehicle before committing long term?
- Would you rather avoid end-of-lease charges and depreciation risk?
Let’s find the right option for you
Every business is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. That’s why we start with a conversation, not a sales pitch.
